Trait-Based Investigation Reveals Patterns of Community Response to Nutrient Enrichment in Coastal Mesic Grassland

Despite recent advances, we still do not understand how chronic nutrient enrichment impacts coastal plant community structure and function. We aimed to clarify such by testing for differences in ecosystem productivity multiple metrics response fertilization. established plots 2015 consisting of control (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), + (NP) treatments a mid-Atlantic grassland. In 2017 collected aboveground biomass, functional traits, species abundance each plot. Our findings indicate synergistic co-limitation, that NP were more productive than all other treatments. A combination traits responsible competition uptake (i.e., height δ15N) caused trait-based divergence N from C P plots. Functional composition patterns differed lifeform patterns, highlighting complexities enrichment. While alpha-diversity did differ among treatments, it was positively correlated with biomass production, suggesting nutrients may impact indirectly through increased productivity.
